The Curlew was a beautiful quarterly journal of international nature writing that helped raise funds for conservation projects around the world. I founded and edited The Curlew, and contributed to each issue.
It contained essays, poetry, fiction, photographs and illustrations from at least 28 countries, many from well-known writers and artists. The Sanderlings section was for writers and illustrators under the age of 16.
I launched it at the Hay International Literary Festival. Each issue was named after a genus of tree.
Sales of each issue contributed to a different conservation project, from kiwi breeding in New Zealand to school benches in Uganda.
Sadly, costs became too great, particularly due to Brexit, and it has ceased publication.
