Blackwork Continuum

Ink, Blackwork embroidery, leather, fused organza, washers, beads, calligraphy on handmade paper.

45 x 55 cm inc. frame

This painstaking embroidery was inspired by the ancient technique of Blackwork (first mentioned by Chaucer in the 13th century but made popular in the reigns of King Henry VIII and Queen Elizabeth I).

But although traditional Blackwork Embroidery is part of the design, the rest is composed of contemporary materials and techniques, from fused organzas to metal washers.  The title alludes to ancient embroidery techniques still being relevant today.
